Friday April 18, 2003: the clock beats out of time
Sometimes, life just picks me up and sweeps me along and I find myself not wanting to protest too much, lest I spoil the ride. My entire life has seemed like an unexpected roadtrip for the last little bit, and only now has it seemed to calm down.
I figure catching up would be in order.
Part the First: computers are evil
I had everything set up and working together, and decided to add Chris as a user so he, too, could use pmachine. That's when everything went straight to hell. I did something Very, Very Bad to MySQL, which was sort of struggling anyway, and I messed up the user table and then everything sort of imploded.
Much swearing ensued.
Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of time to attempt to fix things, so it sort of festered for a while. I finally asked for help from my extremely generous friend Ray, who very obligingly set up MySQL for me again and did it right this time.
MySQL and I don't get along. I'm going to have to find out what Ray did so I can threaten it if it misbehaves again.
Upshot: no entries since February. I feel like such a slacker.
Part the Second: kittens are fuzzy
Cricket has elected to put much of her formidable energy into growing. she's about seven pounds now, and still about half the size of the other cats. I guess she's pretty darned dense. Like lead, or a neutron star. She grows ever more independent, and more capable of getting into trouble.
She's started climbing everything. There is literally no surface in the house that is safe from her.
Lilith, being her evil evil self, has decided that now would be a good time to act like a kitten again. A fifteen-pound kitten. While this is very cute, the "cat going nuts during sheet changing" thing is starting to get disturbing. In Cricket, it's adorable. In Lilith, it verges on the malevolent.
If I am discovered trussed up and exsanguinated, I'm sure you all know who to suspect did it.
Upshot: a couple of new scars from Lilith, a couple of new pictures of Cricket. Juniper remains fluffy.
Part the Third: girls are soft
A couple of friendships of mine have turned sexual recently. I don't mind. At all. As a matter of fact, I am infected with something very like spring fever.
Upshot: what did you think you were going to get details? Maybe later.
Part the Fourth: schedules are nice
My time has been pretty well accounted for these days, what with work taking over most of my waking and much of my sleeping life. when I'm not working, I'm working out, eating, reading, or sleeping, for the most part.
I like this. The days are divided and differentiated and it's a lovely structure to work in--i can shuffle things around if it suits me, but mostly I let it alone.
And, lovely thing, work is scheduled to become less all-consuming soon. Just in time, too.
Part the Fifth: bodies are pretty cool
I've been doing well on the diet I'm on--i've now dropped 25 pounds since January, 20 of that in the last seven weeks. I'm feeling a lot better about myself these days. I have a long, long way to go yet, but I think this time I can get there.
A couple of interesting diet notes:
There are such things as low-carb candy bars now. I am fascinated. I actually bought some. I figure if I ever have a chocolate craving, these are better for me than a real candy bar. I'm not planning on eating them regularly, though--i just have massive, nasty chocolate cravings at certain times of the month.
I think i've broken my carbohydrate addiction--I haven't had a bona fide craving in a week and a half. I am so glad. The cravings were making my life absolute hell.
And I found out in a most unpleasant fashion that I probably should not be eating rice on a regular basis, even when I go back to eating normally. I'd always noticed that rice seemed to do bad things to me, but I've now had it confirmed. I'll spare you all the details.
also, my favorite low-cut jeans are literally falling off of me. While this has vast entertainment value, I'm not sure that people on the street really want to be entertained by my underwear. I could be mistaken, though.
In other body news:
I went to my new GP (my old one had a baby and retired from medicine) and got a number of prescriptions: Zyrtec, Flonase, and Albuterol for my encounters with the most allergenic cat in the world. My new GP is cool; he's careful about doing checks for skin cancer, and he's easy to talk to.
I also finished the massive series of dental work I'd been having done: about $4500 and six months from start to finish. fortunately, I only had to pay about 15% of that, but still. Ow.
Upshot: I feel better now than I have for months. Laying off the caffeine helps, too.
Part the Sixth: in which our heroine goes to bed
And that's really that. I have a massage scheduled with CC tomorrow morning (she's in massage school), and then I have some work on the house to do, and then I am probably going down to Norwescon to hang out with people in the evening.
But, first! I must go to bed, and sleep, so all the lovely things can happen tomorrow, when I am not tired.
I figure catching up would be in order.
